A 29-year-old man is dead after a convicted felon with an extensive criminal record allegedly stabbed him in the neck in broad daylight Sunday afternoon on Atlanta’s busy Beltline trail near a Kroger grocery store.

Atlanta Police say 54-year-old Jonathan Hamby, a convicted felon with 30 previous arrest cycles, was on active probation for an aggravated assault case out of Brookhaven when the attack occurred.

Officers arrested him on the scene shortly after the incident.

Witness accounts indicate the dispute may have involved Hamby accusing others of trying to take his belongings, though police have not confirmed that any theft occurred.
