A ‘plague’ of flies is swarming UK homes — here’s how to get rid of them

Amid the fourth heatwave of 2026 (so far), UK homes are being invaded by an increasing number of flies.

There are a number of reasons for this so-called ‘plague’, but summer climes plays a particularly pivotal role.

For one, as temperatures rise, fly eggs can hatch in less than half the time it takes normally.

Plus, because flies are cold-blooded, if it gets hotter outside they’re inclined to look for shady and moist spots — like your humble abode — to lay their eggs.
