Thousands of women giving birth in NHS hospitals have had their care disrupted by water leaks, sewage spills and collapsing ceilings, a report has revealed.
Maternity and neonatal care units in England recorded nearly 15,000 incidents of interruption or delays to care caused by building or equipment breakdown in only three years.
These are serious deficiencies:
Buildings in nearly half of England’s 120 trusts with maternity facilities failed to meet basic health and safety standards. About 50 maternity hospitals needed major repairs and eight were at “serious risk of imminent breakdown”.
