Can you believe it’s Pokémon‘s 30th anniversary this year? What started as a 1996 game for the humble Game Boy quickly snowballed into anime, trading cards, movies, Netflix series and Pokémon Go.
I remember being so excited to get my hands on Pokémon cards as a kid – swapping them with my cousins, counting our shiny ones and storing them proudly in special ringbinders.
Now, the youngest generation are getting to do the same – but, of course, the toys and the merch are 10x better than three decades ago.
There’s Smart Lego, where you can build Pokémon characters and they then interact during play; and don’t get me started on the adorable puppetronic Pikachu, which my daughter carried everywhere with her for weeks (no mean feat given Pikachu is larger than our cat – unfortunately we had to draw the line at taking him on holiday).
