I Asked AI About the AI Threat

Artificial intelligence is in the news, with what seems to be a well-coordinated effort to create panic on the part of the usual suspects. AI: it’s scary, like COVID! Or global warming! Better turn it over to the government!

I don’t think so. I think Donald Trump is right about this: one thing we know for sure is that China isn’t going to cut back on AI development. I suspect that some of the “experts” now hysterically calling for AI retrenchment and regulation (same thing) are being paid by the Chinese, and others (not all, to be fair) are ideologically aligned with the CCP.

Beyond those big-picture thoughts, I didn’t have any insight into whether AI does or does not pose a threat of going rogue, with disastrous consequences for the human race. I wondered, whom could I ask. And it occurred to me to ask Perplexity, the AI agent that I have been using lately for research, and with which I have been impressed.
