I’m a dad. I’m also a childminder. It’s such a rare combination that only a few hundred people in England can say the same.

Of course, I knew going into it that the profession was unlikely to have a 50/50 gender split, but even I was taken aback to learn that men make up just 3% of the childcare workforce.

I’ll tell anyone who will listen that it’s one of the best, most fulfilling jobs out there – so it saddens me to think that half of the working population might be automatically ruling it out.

And it makes me wonder why we aren’t doing more to change that.
