When Kit Barrus was eight, she started sneaking books out of her local library, reading them cover to cover.

She wanted to keep them away from the prying eyes of her mum, who had a habit of taking a black marker and redacting the pages.

‘It was like the censoring of a government document,’ Kit tells Metro.
