There are those of us who toss and turn at night, struggling to drift off.

And then there are those of us who smugly hop into bed, lie down and fall asleep within seconds of our heads touching the pillow. 

If you fall into the latter camp, you might be thinking you’re onto a winning formula. But it turns out drifting off rapidly might be a sign you’re not getting enough quality sleep.

Why falling asleep quickly can be a red flag

Omar El-Gohary, superintendent pharmacist at IQ Doctor, said consistently falling asleep extremely quickly isn’t always a good thing.

“Many people think falling asleep the moment their head hits the pillow is a sign of good sleep health, but in reality, it can sometimes mean the opposite,” he said.

“Although it may seem ideal, consistently drifting off within just a few minutes can be a sign that your body is carrying a significant sleep debt and is struggling to stay awake.”
