A row of young street trees, each supported by a low wooden guard, has been planted along the square's northern edge. Newington Green itself is one of London's oldest public squares, laid out in the sixteenth century and now bordered by a mix of Georgian, Victorian and more recent buildings straddling the historic boundary between the boroughs of Islington and Hackney. Newington Green's public square has been redeveloped and replanted several times since the late twentieth century, with the current layout of raised beds and steel planters dating from a more recent public realm scheme.
