A former British ambassador has demolished one of Donald Trump’s key claims about what the war in Iran has achieved.

Sir Simon Gass, who was the UK government’s representative in Iran between 2009 and 2011, said the conflict may even have strengthened the country’s rulers.

Trump said regime change in Tehran was one of his goals when the US and Israel began bombing the country at the end of February.

He has since pointed to the killing of Iran’s former supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, and other senior regime figures as proof that has been achieved.

But on Radio 4′s Today programme on Wednesday, Sir Simon dismissed that suggestion.
