In my observation, the historical romance sections of most bookstores are severely lacking. You’ll see a bunch of Bridgerton novels, the Outlander series, possibly a couple other Regency heavy hitters like Lisa Kleypas or Tessa Dare, and that’s about it. While there are fantastic books among the aforementioned offerings, they are a thin gruel for the voracious reader. You deserve more to browse from, and since I’m not a bookseller curating the shelves, I’m going to make you a list instead.
What I’m gathering today are historical romances that are both recently published (2025 or 2026) and “under the radar,” which by my definition means they have fewer than 500 ratings on Goodreads at the time of writing. While I wish to offer you more historical romances set in places other than Regency and Victorian England, I’ve had a tough time finding books that met my criteria.
