OpenAI employee Rohan Varma has taken down the browser-based, AI-coded RuneScape clone called Elderwood following negative attention from the RuneScape community and a cease-and-desist request from developer Jagex.

Varma did not post video footage of Elderwood in action, but screenshots on his X profile (via Eurogamer) show a game with extremely similar graphics and UI to Old School RuneScape. Elderwood further had identical place names to OSRS, including the celebrated Lumbridge, and Varma explicitly described it as an OSRS clone in some of his posts. Varma is a developer on OpenAI's Codex project, a coding-focused AI tool he used to build Elderwood.
