Police are investigating the death of former MP and Tory minister Ann Widdecombe.

The ex-prisons minister, who was 78, found fame outside politics after starring in Strictly Come Dancing in 2010.

Devon and Cornwall Police are expected to issue an update on her death on Friday afternoon.

A spokesman for the coroner’s office for the county of Devon, Plymouth and Torbay said: “Preliminary inquiries are ongoing.”

Prime minister Keir Starmer led the tributes to Widdecombe, who was an MP between 1987 and 2010, and went on to join the Brexit Party and then Reform UK.

A Downing Street spokeswoman said: “The prime minister was saddened to hear of the death of Ann Widdecombe.

“She was a distinctive figure in British politics for many years, and he pays tribute to the conviction and dedication with which she served her country.”

Kemi Badenoch said Widdecombe had been a “formidable politician”.<...
