The Euclid space telescope captured this image of the comet C/2026 S1 (Euclid), the first comet discovered by the space telescope. This is a happy accident, since Euclid's mission is to measure billions of galaxies and study the force that drives the expansion of the Universe, dark energy. Euclid has observed other comets, but this is the first one it's discovered. Image Credit: ESA/Euclid/Euclid Consortium/NASA, M. Pöntinen et al. 2026. The ESA's Euclid space telescope was launched in July, 2026, and its mission is to observe billions of galaxies. The goal is to measure their redshifts over 10 billion years of Universal expansion, to better understand dark matter and dark energy. Surprisingly, the telescope has discovered a brand new comet, now named C/2026 S1 (Euclid).
