As Keir Starmer becomes the sixth prime minister to resign in 10 years, it seems there’s one clear answer to this high turnover.

Simply put, the UK government has a giant load… an allostatic load, to be precise. Keir is just the latest in a long line of PMs to crumble under the weight of it.

Psychologist Lucy Beresford tells Metro that an allostatic load is the cumulative impact of external instability. It refers to the detrimental impact on the body and mind when you’ve suffered under prolonged or regular stress.
